FrameCat development journal: keep a video's best moments at full resolution
FrameCat began with a simple goal: avoid black bars and lost resolution in phone screenshots, browse frame by frame, then save images separately or stitch them together.
Where the idea came from
The need was straightforward. Sometimes we choose to shoot a video, but later only want to share a few great moments as photos. I used to take screenshots, but the phone's screen and the video have different proportions, leaving black bars. The screen resolution is also lower: a screenshot from 4K footage can end up below 2K. On a Mac, a player such as IINA lets me press Command+S to save a high-quality frame. I wanted that convenience on a phone: a high-resolution still image taken directly from a video.
What the app does
Select a video from Photos or Files and capture frames from it.
Captured images retain the original video's resolution.
A trackpad-like control feels natural under your finger, with distinct steps: scrub quickly or move one frame at a time.
If you capture several frames, stitch them into one long image or save each one separately.
